Experienced and Conquered: Frederick C. Fischer, Musician, Aboard USS Constitution, 1844–1846 (Westminster, MD: Peach Originals, 1996)
by Annabelle F. Fischer
"On the 8th of February, I and my father took leave of my Geschwistern and undertook a very important trip, which will stand before my eyes as perhaps the most important trip of my lifetime .... On the 11th of February, we enrolled on the frigate USS Constitution for the rate of 13 dollars a month."
Thus begins this teenager's three-year adventure sailing around the world on Old Ironsides as a musician in its Navy Band. His narrative journal, translated from the German, gives details of entertainments and events aboard and ashore. Supplemented by entries from Midshipman Terrett's Journal and the Ship's Log, reports of the trade mission to Borneo, and a section on crew and passengers, this book adds significantly to the body of work now in print on this 1844-1846 world cruise.
